Week 2: Breaking the Rules, Designer Products & Video Reviews

Breaking the Rules
In Creative Thinking class this week, we learnt about breaking the rules. Well, I think rules are meant to be broken but it is to be broken to an extent. Without rules, laws and regulations, the world will be chaotic(duh). We made rules to restrict ourselves from doing the wrong things. Everybody follows the rules but we are all humans after all so breaking a rule is a normal thing to do.

But rules don't only apply to laws and regulations. Designers think wayyyy out of the box to create the most creative product/pieces that they can and they bend the rules here & there for people to notice their work and to make their work stand out. "For every broken rule, there are a dozen of unbroken ones."

Here's an old song by Charli XCX also about breaking the rules. I don't wanna go to school too but I have to, can't break that rule unless I have MC...

Designer Products
Object Name: Eclipse Lamp
Designer Name: Mauricio Klabin
Year: 1991

Function: It can be a table lamp or you can hang it on your ceiling and can be shifted into different angle/shape to create a different ambience.

Review: I think this product is really sophisticated and the designer wants to give people a feeling and sensation of comfort and warmth, as if when somebody is hugging them. I love how it can be changed to different shapes and the design is also small and you can leave it as a normal table lamp or a hanging lamp whenever you want. Don’t you feel calm when you’re staring at it? Because I do!

Object Name: Thin Black Lines
Designer Name: Nendo
Year: 2010

Function:
Sit…
This chair is designed by a Japanese designer—Nendo.
The chair makes people think whether it exist. He only used some simple line to make the chair. In some angles, we can only see lines in 2D, is like the shadow in some of our sketches. If we let a person sit on the chair. In some angles, we can see a man sit on the lines. It is like a man “sit” on some 2D lines.
“Why I can’t sit on the lines.” In his design, we can. So I think this is how he break the rule. There are some of the photos and my imagine below, to better explain my opinion…

I think this is amazing design for break traditional bookshelf style. Because this designer use curves make up the bookshelf, but many bookshelf like use line. And this bookworm can flexible, can make many shape on the wall. For example, it can roll on the wall, that's can save many space in the room.

Review of 5 videos
For the brain tricks video, I think it is really interesting how our "fast thinking" part of the brain can be so quick to judge and assume something. Well, for "slow thinking"... I think we only use it when we're solving something or thinking about something deeper. To be honest, I hate math and watching parts of the video makes me wanna yawn.

Watching the Apple - Think Different Commercial, made me think of Steve Jobs and what he created. I am a huge fan of apple and I don't think I'll use any other brand other than iPhone. The video is short and simple, it spreads a message and this video really is a very good marketing campaign to attract business. I think, in order to stand out or change the world, you have to think and see differently.

Ahh super lazy to watch the Julie Burstein video because it is 17 minutes long... but I have to. :/ The video is boring and I almost fell asleep but I got through the whole video!! But what I learned from her is that we can be creative and find creativeness by seeing different things. Everybody thinks differently. Creativity grows out of you everyday from experience. You have to embrace yourself, experience different things through the good and the bad. I wanna be a film maker/producer in the future so in the end, I find this video quite interesting and I learned something from it.

The other two videos are about reflective writing, I think reflection is very important. Everyday, you look at yourself in the mirror and you might think to yourself "Damn... I look good today". Or maybe, if you have a journal and you write down whatever that happened and you reflect. The past or the future, you reflect on both side and you think about what has happened and what is going to happen.
